Spooktacular 5K Ghouls, Goblins and Fast Winners

Huntsville’s biggest costume party, with everything from Hot Cheetos, elves and goblins to the cast from Shrek, hit the downtown streets Saturday morning in the Spooktacular 5K and Monster Mile.

More than 1,200 runners and walkers finished the annual autumn funfest. Some costumes were homemade, some store-bought. Funny, conventional, wild, scary, cute, alien, traditional. A swimmer with towel, cap and goggles was in the mix. Little Debbie was there (but no sprinkle cakes … sad). Peanut Butter and Jelly made an appearance. A few pirates … arrggghhh! Young and old all had fun.

The 5K started in front of the Huntsville Museum of Art, wound past the new Federal Courthouse, behind FBC and the VBC, through downtown and Courthouse Square, and back to the finish at Big Spring. Fleet Feet Huntsville/Madison put on the race.

Evan Atkins, 18, of Jasper, held off a surging Logan Wood, 11, of Meridianville, to win in 16:47. Wood finished in 16:52.

Sarah Crouch, 37, of Madison, won the women’s title and was third overall. She finished in 17:36.

In the Monster Mile, Jacob Garcia, 27, of Madison, crossed in 5:40 to get the win. Mason Phillips, 30, of Madison, was right behind in 5:43.
