McLellan Madness

ANNISTON — Catherine Toriello of Huntsville led the local contingent finishing the McLellan Madness 8-hour endurance event on March 1.

Toriello finished in fourth place with 41.1 miles in eight hours, followed by Kyle Wagner (41 miles) and Matthew Mullens (36.95) of Owens Cross Roads. They were the only area competitors finishing in the top 10.

Cody Mathis of Madison was 12th with 32.86 miles. Tiffany Louie of Huntsville was 21st with 24.66 miles. Elizabeth Collinsworth of Killen was 23rd with 24.64 miles.

In the 4-hour event, Elizabeth Whitaker of Scottsboro completed 20.52 miles and finished 11th. Emeterio Hernandez of Harvest completed 16.48 miles and was 15th, and Colleen Mullins of Owens Cross Roads had 4.1 miles for 28th.

Mississippi Trail 50

LAUREL, Miss. — Josh Cornett of Madison finished 15th in the iconic Mississippi Trail 50K on March 1.

Cornett finished in 6:21:19. He originally was in the 50-miler but dropped to the 50k due to some cramping issues. Trail stuff, y’know? A handful of Alabama runners also finished the 100-mile, 50-mile and 20k events.

The weekend events were held in the DeSoto National Forest on gently rolling hills, mostly single track with some double track logging roads. Temps were a bit warm for early spring. The 50-miler has been held off-on since 1980 and the 50K since 1996.

Delano Endurance

DECATUR — J.D. Pollard won the 12-hour Solo division and Jericho Cooey captured the 50-mile crown in the 19th annual Delano Park endurance events on March 8.

Pollard, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., finished the 12-hour Solo event with 68 miles. Kevin Steegen of Huntsville was second with 67 miles. Lindsey Shady of Huntsville and Lindsey Studtmann of Jackson, Tenn., tied for third place with 61 miles. These four runners were the only ones in the field of 99 finishers to complete more than 60 miles.

Cooey won the 50-mile crown 7:16:44, topping Drew Whitworth of Ashland City, Tenn. He finished in 7:57:12.

The annual event, commonly known simply as “You doin’ Delano?,” takes place each year in early March at Delano Park. It’s the oldest, and most scenic, park in Decatur. The course is certified at 1 mile. Runners in the 50-mile are dashing for a time, while the 12-hour solo runners are clocking laps to see who can do the most in that time period.

The record for the 12-hour mileage is 86 miles, set in 2016 by 28-year-old Sho Gray. The women’s record of 78 miles was set in 2009 by 34-year-old Jamie Rotar. The 50-mile records are held by Jeremy Pade (2014, 5:50:52) and Kathy Youngren (2012, 6:56:29). Youngren, of Huntsville, also is No. 2 on the list with a 2011 time of 7:06:59.

Some runners use the Delano event for training, stopping at 20 or 30 or whatever distance. Others push on past their training target, sometimes due to taunting from friends or because they feel good or perhaps are winning and don’t want to stop. Whatever the reason, it’s a cool event with two decades of history.

Gurley Lions Club 5K

GURLEY — Kendall Dock won the Gurley Lions Club 5K on March 1 in 22:05.

The event is a fundraiser by the Lions Club to help with its eyesight programs and other projects. Runners dashed through the quiet streets of the city.

Kalea Loving of Harvest won the women’s division, finishing 15th in 26:58.

Florida Death Race

LEE, Fla. — Jason Fitzpatrick and Todd Patterson completed the inaugural 74-mile Florida Death Race on March 7.

Fitzpatrick, of Ooltewah, Tenn., finished 18th in 17:03:24. Patterson, of Chattanooga, was 23rd in 17:41:31.

The event had 47 finishers from more than 10 states including Pennsylvania and Colorado. Runners had about 74 miles, not exact, mostly on the Florida Trail and were required to carry a 1-pound railroad spike. This is a sister event to the Georgia Death Race.
