TVO Roundup: Black Canyon Ultra, We Run This Beach and More

It’s been a weekend of huge events and the TVO Roundup is jammed with super successful finishes from area runners.

Saturday morning saw a record turnout for the annual Paper Chase 5K in Huntsville. Meanwhile runners from Gulf Shores to Arizona were dashing around on trails and roads.

We Run This Beach

GULF SHORES — Nathaniel Pierce of Huntsville sped to the top of the pack in the 4th annual We Run This Beach marathon Sunday morning at Gulf State Park.

Pierce grabbed the win in 2:46:21, two minutes ahead of his closest pursuer. Logan Roberts of Pensacola was second in 2:48 and Jason Watts of Athens was third in 2:54.

Christy Huftstutler of Helena took top women’s honors and was fourth overall. She finished in 3:06:31.

Eagle Ridge 50K

GUNTERSVILLE — Bailey Tarvin of Boaz won the Eagle Ridge 50K on Feb. 8 at Lake Guntersville State Park.

Tarvin finished in 5:15:26. Alex Springer of Madison was second in 6:08.

Kari Wever of Harvest won the women’s title and was seventh overall. She finished in 7:26.

Beau Beard of Chelsea won the Eagle Ridge half-marathon in 1:46, and Nicole Dieckow of Anniston took the women’s title in 2:05. She was sixth overall.

Alan Bocanegra of Albertville won the 5K in 27:33. Lauren Estes of Cullman won the women’s division and was ninth overall and finished in 36:27.

Black Canyon Ultras

MAYER, Ariz. — A handful of Huntsville runners completed the 15th annual Black Canyon Ultra 100K on Feb. 8-9.

David Dehaye, 56, finished in 17:33:28. Pierce Lehr, 42, finished in 18:04:45. Brian McNease of Hampton Cove finished in 18:57:30.

Seth Ruhling of Boulder, Col., won in 7:24:56, the second-best time in race history.

Auburn Runfest

AUBURN — Josh Whitehead of Huntsville nabbed a third straight win in the Auburn Runfest half-marathon on Feb. 23.

Whitehead, 46, sped through the Loveliest Village in 1:11:55. He won by about 30 seconds, leading the field of runners onto Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium to the finish line.

John Murray Jr. of Harvest was ninth, in 1:19:53.

In the 5K event, Heath Varmette of Huntsville was second in 16:03. Tyler Morring of Toney was sixth in 17:27.
