TVO Roundup: Mountain Mania Returns, McDonald Whips The Scream

It’s been a busy few weeks in the area, as our latest TVO Roundup will attest, with a handful of events and news about others coming soon.

Mountain Maina Opens

Registration is open for the challenging Mountain Maina 15K and 5K road events in Decatur on Oct. 21. Runners climb Burningtree Mountain — twice for the 15K — before finishing at Burningtree Country Club.

This year’s Mountain Mania will be a fundraiser for the Salvation Army of Decatur. The organization’s annual Red Kettle Ride is not happening this year.  Mountain Maina will benefit the Salvation Army this year. Mountain Mania will become the Red Kettle Run starting in 2024.

The course is fairly straightforward: make a loop in the Burningtree County Club parking lot to spread out, then head up the mountain. The course loops through the neighborhood, with 15K runners continuing on eastward and down before making a second climb and back to the finish. The 5K top the mountain and loop around, then back to the finish.

It’s a fun, challenging and (depending on your speed) potentially lung-busting quad-burning way to spend a morning.

McDonald Tops The Scream

Melissa McDonald of Lacey’s Spring smacked around The Scream half-marathon course in North Carolina on July 29.

McDonald completed the trail event in 2:43:48. The course is an out-and-back on Brown Mountain Beach Road in the Wilson Creek Recreation Area of the Grandfather Ranger District.  The course runs along the river and is the last section of the old Ridge-to-Bridge/Peak-to-Creek Marathon.

Alley, Miller Slap Skunk Ape

Ciara Alley of Nashville and Donovan Miller of Harvest captured the 10-mile and 5-mile titles July 29 in the third event of the Wild Thangs summer series at Monte Sano State Park.

Alley, 34, smashed the 10-mile course in the teeth with a fast time of 1:24:04. That’s third-best in the event’s six-year history. Alley won by more than a minute over Jared Murray of Birmingham. Tyson Jouglet of Huntsville was third in 1:26:31. The field had 126 finishers.

Miller, 20, captured the 5-mile run in a speedy 39:59, good for ninth on the event’s Top 10 list. He nipped Cleophus Pickett of Huntsville by seven seconds. Alexander Fox of Huntsville was third in 43:04. The field had 210 finishers.

The fourth and final Wild Thangs event of the summer season will be Aug. 19 at the state park, with the Chupacabra half-marathon and 10K events. Registration is open for both.
