TVO Roundup: Path to Positivity 5K, Coastal Tri, Wy’East Wonder 50K and More

September arrived with a burst of events throughout the region, making this week’s TVO Roundup a bit bigger and more fun.

From swimming and running to a triathlon, it was a busy weekend. Things got kicked off Friday night with the Swing Through 5K at Calhoun College. The second Fleet Feet Fall Fitness Festival got Saturday roaring, and the weekend ended with the third Boston or Bust marathon. A lot happened, so on to the TVO Roundup!

Alabama Coastal Tri

GULF SHORES — Matthew Fletcher of Madison finished 10th in the Alabama Coastal Triathlon on Sept. 7.

Fletcher finished in 2:17, putting together a Gulf of Mexico swim of 26:34, bike of 1:05:43 and run of 40:53. He had transitions of 2:21 and 1:27.

Aaron Klopfer of Chattanooga finished 18th in 2:24:15, and Alex Tomlinson of Huntsville was 48th in 2:36:02.

Disneyland Half

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Esra Aranson of Huntsville completed the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon and was among a handful of Alabama runners in the event on Sept. 7.

Aranson finished 201st in the field of 11,161 with a time of 1:51:32.

Swim Hobbs Island

Emilie Tesseneer, Jordan Cobb and Oliver Parkinson took top honors in the Swim Hobbs Island open water swim on Sept. 8 in the Tennessee River out of Ditto Landing.

The event is put on by the Team Rocket Tri Club of Huntsville and is part of the Triple Crown of the Tennessee series.

Tesseneer won the 1-mile swim in 26:41 and Cobb took top honors in the 2-mile swim in 46:01. Parkinson won the 5-mile swim in 1:48:46.

Wy’East Wonder 50K

PARKDALE, Ore. — Colleen Wilson-Hodge of Huntsville won her age division title in the scenic Wy’East Wonder 50K on Sept. 7.

Wilson-Hodge, 55, finished the point-to-point race in 7:13:49 and took top honors in the women’s 50-59 division. She was 88th overall in the race, which had 206 finishers.

Wy’East Wonder 50K and 50-mile are held on Mt. Hood with a net downhill, point-to-point setup mostly on Gunsight Ridge and Surveyor’s Ridge. Wy’East is the Multnomah Tribe word for Mt. Hood, and runners have plenty of sights of it and the surrounding scenery. The 50K has about 4,000 feet of gain and 7,000 of loss; the 50-miler is 7,000/10,000.

Rebecca Mountain 50 Mile

SYLACAUGA — Deanna Doane of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., won the Rebecca Mountain 50-mile race in record time and became the first woman to win in its eight-year history.

Doane, 26, finished in 8:13:42 and broke the women’s record by 39 minutes. Megan Gerdes was second in 9:18:16, and Morgan Estell was third in 9:25:30.

Matthew Pittenger, 28, of Elkmont, was second and took top men’s honors in 8:47:57. Brian Montero, 49, of Atlanta, was third (2nd male) in 8:59:55 and Gabe Peters, 36, of Tallahassee, Fla., was fourth (3rd male) in 9:13:25.

Nadia Carrillo of Dacula, Ga., (11:10:13) won Female Masters honors and Arabelle Higgins of Canton, Ga., (12:37:05) won Grand Master honors.

Brandon Conner of Peachtree Corners, Ga., (9:40:02) was the Male Master winner and Francois Henneberger of Enterprise (9:35:43) was Grand Master.

F5 Path to Positivity 5K

Nathaniel Pierce and Kassidy Young won top honors in the Path to Positivity 5K on Sept. 7 at the Fleet Feet Fall Fitness Festival in Huntsville.

Pierce took overall honors in 17:28, and Young claimed top women’s honors with her time of 20:02. She was 14th overall.

The festival at Hays Farm was put on by Fleet Feet, Path to Positivity, Hays Farm and the City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation. The Path to Positivity 5K had more than 500 participants. Other events included a 1-mile fun run, community bike ride with Sunset Bicycles and fitness sessions with Burn Boot Camp, OrangeTheory, Regimen, the YMCS, Rumble, Breathwork and IronTribe.

More than 50 exhibitors were at the free event. All proceeds will assist with local mental health initiatives and scholarships for students seeking careers in the mental health field.

Twisted Ankle 10-Mile

SUMMERVILLE, Ga. — Justin Maze of Arab completed the Twisted Ankle 10-mile trail race Sept. 7 at Sloppy Floyd State Park.

Maze, 44, of Arab, finished seventh in 1:51:07.

Zac Wilson, 46, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., was third in 1:32:04.

The 10-mile run was part of the Twisted Ankle lineup at the park that included a half-marathon and 5K.

Jake Fast of Cleveland, Tenn., was second in the half marathon in 2:08:29.
