TVO Weekend Wrap: Bozeman Tames Bad Kitty, Mercedes Bids Adieu

Riley Bozeman and Jeremy Smith cruised to easy wins Saturday in the Bad Kitty 5K and 10K trail runs in Florence.

Bozeman, of Florence, won the 5K title in 26:41. Abby Summers of Corinth, Miss., won the women’s title and was second overall in 28:30. Luke Boyd of Killen was third in 30:40.

In the Bad Kitty 10K event, Smith won by almost 10 minutes. The speedster from Florence crossed in 38:39:59, while Zach Jones of Glen, Miss., was second in 47:46. Lily Hatton was third overall and first female in 49:08.

Sixty-one runners finished the 5K and 75 finished the 10K.

The Bad Kitty is a non-profit event organized by the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, a National Park Service-funded program housed at the University of North Alabama. All proceeds will be used to fund (1) projects supporting trail development in Wildwood Park and (2) programs in Wildwood Park organized by graduate students in UNA’s Sports and Recreation Management program.

Mercedez Benz Marathon

Another longtime running event in Alabama, the Mercedez Benz Marathon and race weekend, closed its final chapters Saturday in the Magic City.

For more than 20 years the marathon, half marathons and other events have been a big attraction in mid-February. With a hilly course and a lot of fan support, it became and remains a popular event. But management changes brought about the finale this weekend. Another popular race also ended this weekend after a 10-year run.

Amanda Steinmetz of Huntsville set a PR in the marathon in 4:43:21, and also in the 5K. Other area marathon finishers included Bennett Smith of Owens Cross Roads (4:54), Allison Berry of Madison (5:35), Bryan Millhouse of Huntsville (3:44), Ethan Wiedner of Danville (4:06), Lucas Field of Huntsville (5:56), Brett Simon of Madison (3:54), Allison Lingo of Madison (4:14), Jan Lawley of Madison (4:14) and Scott Pollard of Huntsville (4:45).

Wesley Woods 10K

Mason Raker won the 6-mile Wesley Woods 10K in Townsend, Tenn., in a time of 51:13.

Keegan Moore was second in 51:43.

Bonnie Enders won the women’s title in 55:08 and was fourth overall. Kristin Vittorini was second (11th) in 1:08.

Runners competed on the trails of Camp Wesley Woods, located in Townsend beneath the Foothills Parkway. Wesley Woods is a camp located in Townsend TN which is home to numerous camps throughout the year for various groups ranging from boy scouts,  business retreats, recovery retreats, adult get-aways, as well as being a destination for church camps. 

Gone Loco Ultra

Marianne Butt of Owens Cross Roads knocked out the Gone Loco Ultra on Sunday in Athens, Tenn., winning the womens’ title in a time of 6:02:28. The GLC is a 33-mile event.

Cheryl Webster of Huntsville finished 27th in 6:38.

James Barnard of Oak Ridge, Tenn., was the overall winner, in 4:47. It was his third GLC title. The field had 49 finishers.

Ken Lonseth of Knoxville won the 11-mile event in 1:24. Dana Rohloff of Knoxville finished second and won the women’s title, in 1:27.

Runners toodled along on the Eureka Trail in Athens, Tenn. It was created by a rails-to-trails conversion is a flat, runnable gravel trail winding through woods, rural landscapes and the community of Mashburn before ending at the outskirts of Englewood.
