Tyson Jouglet of Huntsville won the Huntsville Slam, which is comprised of the Mountain Mist 50K, Recover from the Holidays 50K, Rocket City Marathon and Dizzy 50s 50K.
That’s quite impressive. Even moreso, perhaps, considering he was doing all this less than a year after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Area runners for years have competed in some or all of the four events, which take place in November, December and January. The marathon is a road event, while the other three are trail events. This year’s Recover 50K was held at John Hunt Running Park in Huntsville, with 10 laps required on the 3.2-mile grass course. Rain a few days prior turned the Hunt course into a muddy slog, making it more fun for the participants.
Jouglet finished the four events in a combined time of 16:43:53. Martin Heimbeck of Huntsville was second in 20:05:35, while Jeff Hogeland of Oneonta was third in 22:40:50.
Only 11 runners vying for the Grand Slam title completed all four events. You can see the full results and times here on Ultra Signup, and click on a runner’s name to see the individual race finishes.
Jouglet’s Journey
Jouglet, 34, is easily recognizable when he’s running thanks to the black top, vivid neon pink shorts and teal shoes. I saw him at the Mountain Mist final aid station where I was helping. He looked comfortable going into the final 2-mile dash to the finish. Only a few knew that a year earlier he was facing a scary situation.
Tyson’s wife, Kim, posted this on Facebook on January 23:
So proud of Tyson! I’m going to have to brag a little. A year ago today was filled with disappointment and fear as he spent the day alone in the ER post-seizure instead of running the Mountain Mist 50K Trail Run. He bravely faced so much uncertainty as he underwent tumor diagnosis, brain surgery and recovery. He came out of it even stronger mentally and physically, and just crushed a grueling schedule this fall! He kicked things off with a 1st OA finish at Dizzy Fifties 50K (4:19:36). He made it happen when RCM was cancelled and absolutely crushed his first ever road marathon at the Gulf Coast Marathon 14th OA (2:53:55). He waded through the mud at Recover from the Holidays 50K 3rd OA (4:26:35). And he just crushed it at Mountain Mist, where after last year, getting to toe the line was an accomplishment! 9th OA 5:03 and change. It has been a joy to be his cheerleader and crew through it all! What started out as one of our hardest years has turned out to be amazing! Thank you to all the friends and family who have helped along the way! We have a great community here!
