A long-planned Land Trust of North Alabama “River to Gap” campaign on Green Mountain is one step closer with the availability of 65 acres.
The project would connect and protect land from Blevins Gap Nature Preserve to the new Green Mountain Trail at Riverview. In what the Land Trust calls “a vital piece of that conservation vision,” the 65 acres is the final link in that unbroken stretch along the mountain. The tract north of Green Mountain Road is between existing protected land.
The Land Trust holds more than 10,000 acres at 10 preserves large and small. More than 80 miles of trails are available for hiking, running, riding, biking, nature watching and other activities.
Green Mountain Project
Land Trust officials are seeking contributions of $200,000 to help complete the purchase of the 65 acres on Green Mountain Total cost is $300,000, and donors already have contributed or pledged $100,000.
The purchase, along with completing an unbroken, protected stretch of land along the mountain, would:
- Protect the community by preventing incompatible development
- Expand the hiking and recreation opportunities that make our area special
- Expand the unbroken wildlife corridor that brings nature to our doorstep
- Ensure water quality protection for the streams and springs that flow through our neighborhood
